Ashwin reached to World No. 2 in Test ranking after his magnificent show against Australia
Ravichandran Ashwin, with his 8 wickets haul in 1st Test against Australia in Border Gavaskar Trophy, which got him to number 2 in the ICC Test ranking for bowlers as per the latest ranking updated by the ICC on Wednesday.
Ashwin grabbed 3 for 42 in the first innings and 5 wickets for 37 runs in the next innings to make his 31st 5 wicket haul which halted Australian team out for 91 in their second innings which led India to glorious victory.
In the meantime India remained at number 2 ranked team in the Test match rankings. Same day ICC released the ranking table in which they mentioned that India has reached number 1 in all the 3 formats including Test, ODI and T20. However by the end of the day Australia again reached the number 1 position on the ICC website, which was caused by a big technical glitch. India attained number 1 ranking in ODI last month after they beat New Zealand by 3-0 at home. This clean sweep of New Zealand came after a clear cut win over Sri Lanka by 3-0.
Now India will have to beat Australia in the next Test match in New Delhi to come near to the top position and so as to strengthen its position in the race for qualifying for the World Test Championship final in June in England. The Indian team led by Rohit Sharma will go far ahead in the race if they win the series by 3-1 or by 4-0 in the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
Moreover, Indian players have also attained milestones in this series and improved their rankings. Ashwin jumped to the second spot in test bowler rankings, which is 21 points less than Australian captain Patt Cummins. He made sure that the Indian team will finish the match up on 3rd day of the Test match, as the off spinner took 5/37 in the second innings and in the 1st innings he took 3/42 in the same match.
Jadeja role in first Test Match
Similarly, like Ashwin did damage in 2nd innings, Jadeja also came to wind up the Australian side in 1st innings by taking 5/47 which includes the wickets of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne. In the 2nd innings jadeja took 2/34 which he contributed with Ashwin to dismiss their 7 batsmen and leave them to 67/7 before getting them all out for 91.
Rohit Sharma Contribution
Finally, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has also joined the league of stepping up in the rankings after a century in Nagpur, he rose from 10th to 8th position ICC Test rankings. Australia were all out for 177 runs when Rohit Sharma came to crease and made the wicket look good and made fantastic 120 runs and set the record for the whole of the match.
