Virat Kohli’s ability to surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s illustrious record of 100 hundreds has sparked a new round of discussion. Following his release from the century drought across all forms in September, Kohli achieved five hundreds, one each in T20Is, ODIs, and Tests, bringing his total for international cricket to 75 tonnes. And although most veterans have supported Kohli in his decision to go against all odds, former India coach Ravi Shastri made an astonishing statement on the likelihood.
He falls just three hundreds short of Sachin’s record for the format, which stands at 49 tonnes, with his three ODI centuries, two of which came in back-to-back innings. In the Test format, where Kohli has 28 hundreds in 108 outings compared to Sachin’s 51 in 200 games, there is a glaring gap.
Kohli has been predicted to eclipse the famous batter’s record in the 50-over format this very year because 2023 will host the ODI World Cup. Veterans believe that the former India captain’s role as an advocate for Test cricket over the next five to six years may provide him a chance to break Sachin’s record of 100 tonnes.
In an interview with SportsYaari, Shastri expressed his confidence that Kohli can play the game for 5 to 6 years with ease, but he was unsure as to whether the star batter could attain that storied milestone.
How many players had 100 hundred-century performances? only one. Thus, it’s a major deal if you declare that he can pass that threshold. There is still a lot of cricket in him. He’s in great shape. And when a player in that class begins to score hundreds, they start to come in succession. There will likely be seven hundreds throughout the course of 15 matches. Because he is fit, Kohli can easily continue to play cricket for another 5–6 years. Yet, it is not at all simple, which is why only one individual has succeeded. So it’s a significant deal that you’re telling me that he might get there, he added.
